“Providing Quality Products for Work or Play!” By Amy lignor When it comes to shopping for those “dream” outdoor items on everyone’s bucket list, Wilson Marine is one place to go for those adventurers who want to have fun outdoors. This locally, the family-owned and operated business has a fantastic background. Part of the Wilson Tractor family established in 1984, also in Newberry, South Carolina, Wilson Marine has built a solid customer base from their ability to provide quality products to make outdoor living easier and more enjoyable. By consistently offering experience, fair prices, and an extremely friendly atmosphere, Wilson Marine fits in the category of being big enough to cover the broad range of equipment needs their customers may have, yet small enough to greet every customer on a first-name basis. John Metts of Wilson Marine took time out of his busy schedule to talk about the company’s past, present, and future when it comes to being a dealer of Tidewater Boats, as well as addressing the key points that make this company a premier spot for customers to attain the very best. How long have you been a dealer of Tidewater Boats? John Metts (J.M.): We have been a Tidewater dealer for a year now, but have been in business for twenty-three years. When selling/presenting a Tidewater boat to potential customers, what is the typical reaction of the consumer to the product in regards to the quality of materials, design, storage, power, performance, etc.? J.M.: Customers are always excited the first time they get in a Tidewater boat! You can notice the appreciation of the clean lines and flared hulls. One of the most common reactions is how much bigger it is than the competitors’ models. What would you say are the top-selling models of Tidewater boats at your dealership, and why? J.M.: It is hard to narrow it down to a model, but one of the most popular is the 220 LXF. This model is a lot of boat for the money. In addition, the Bay models are also very popular with our customers. Can you describe your experience working with Tidewater from a dealer’s perspective? J.M.: From a dealer perspective, I love working with Tidewater. We have a great relationship with everyone at the factory. And, in today’s manufacturing market, it is incredibly nice to be able to work with people you can talk to who genuinely care about their products. Could you tell us more about your dealership? J.M.: We have been in business for twenty-three years now, and plan on many more! We at Wilson Marine strive to give the customer an enjoyable, worry-free experience when purchasing a boat. After all, boats are meant for fun; therefore, buying one should not be a hassle. We take great pride in our service and continue to build long term relationships with all of our customers. Would that be “number one” on the list when it comes to what you would like the potential customer out there to know about your dealership? J.M.: Absolutely. After all, without our customers, we would not be here. What is the most significant change in the marine market you have witnessed in the past few years? J.M.: The market has changed from almost every perspective. The product is different, and prices are higher. We strive to educate the customer rather than taking the “here it is” approach that some dealers do today. Can you tell us a bit about the boat show season that is now underway, and what that entails for the dealer? In the South, our season starts in February with early buyers and boat shows. We then run strong from March until September. Every day we are coordinating service, new rigging, re-powers, and new sales to keep it all running smooth! And seeing as that the company has carved its niche quite nicely for the past twenty-three years, it’s easy to see that everything is definitely “running smoothly” at Wilson Marine.
